What Do Healthy Relationships Look Like begins by having students play a series of games to identify basic communication tips. Next, they use a set of match cards to familiarize themselves with a variety of communication skills and to evaluate their use of them.

In the following lesson, students compete in The Puberty Games, a series of challenges in which they need to communicate effectively with their peers while learning about the changes associated with puberty and human anatomy.

Students then identify the qualities of healthy relationships and learn about the communication skills that help to maintain them. They’ll test these skills in a “speed dating” activity before learning more about intimacy as well as the risks and rewards of sexual relationships. Students learn about pregnancy and the transmission and prevention of STDs. They complete an assignment with a trusted adult to analyze the role of media on our understanding of relationships and sexual health, identify a resource/service in the community and discuss family values/expectations.

The unit concludes with students performing an unscripted role play for the teacher demonstrating empathy and assertive communication. They also complete a “Checking for Understanding” assignment to review all of the material covered in the unit.
