Teen Mental Health

Description

This Teen Mental Health unit of study focuses on National Health Education Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8The unit begins by having students identify their stressors, recognizing how perception plays an important role in the way we experience stress. Students play a game to learn about the stress response and the peak performance curve; highlighting the value of stress in building motivation and drive.

Next, students complete a stress management card sort introducing them to a variety of stress management strategies and helping them to understand when these strategies are best used. They complete an online stress management matrix which allows students to choose up to 15 strategies to try.

Students then compare mental illness with stress; discuss how stigma can interfere with help-seeking, learn to take action when symptoms interfere with their responsibilities, recreation and relationships (the 3 Rs); identify mental health resources & services; and learn the ACT model to help someone who is struggling.

Students analyze the role they play in violence, considering how they can protect both the mental health and safety of others after watching a powerful spoken word piece and completing a group activity.

The unit concludes with an advocacy project in which students use effective advertising strategies to promote a mental health app, service or strategy. This unit consists of 6 lessons. Depending on pacing, this unit will take 10+ hours of instructional time.
