Description
Activities for the Beginning of the School Year is a great way to get your HS skills-based health class started. With at least three days worth of instruction, you’ll be able to establish a safe learning environment, get to know your students, and introduce all of the health skills and a variety of health content. Students will be engaged working cooperatively in teams with hands on activities that will leave them wanting to come back for more.
Activities for the Beginning of the School Year includes:
- A detailed lesson guide with over 30 additional links to information and stats that will enhance class discussions
- A slideshow with over 50 slides to guide you through the activities and provide easy visuals to help understand the prevalence of adolescent risk behaviors (editable in Canva)
- A cooperative activity that allows students to generate a list of expected behaviors to make your classroom a safe learning environment (including a Jamboard activity and a Google form to get to know your students learning needs)
- A getting-to-know-you activity (I Am, I’m Not, I Know) that incorporates movement and provides an opportunity to learn more about your students and to introduce important concepts & content like protective factors, leading causes of death, mental health and more
- An introductory health activity (Shelter from the Storm) that allows students to work in teams to explore the value of health skills and the prevalence of adolescent risk behaviors (Check out this video explaining the activity)
- Bonus parent materials including an adult contact card and editable parent letter

Activities for the Beginning of the School Year focuses on National Health Education Standard #1 and introduces students to Standards #2-8.
