Description
What Are Healthy Foods is a great middle school lesson to introduce nutrition basics. Students begin by completing a “grocery shopping” activity. Next, the class learns nutrition basics. To check for understanding, students work in groups to analyze several foods. The lesson ends by discussing what influences our eating behaviors and having students complete an eating habits self-assessment to personalize their learning.
This lesson was designed in response to current discussions and efforts to ensure that nutrition lessons in health class do not trigger students who may be prone to eating disorders. It includes a section dedicated to this discussion with additional links to further reading on the topic.
What Are Healthy Foods includes:
- Detailed lesson notes including links to additional information to share with students or to improve your own background knowledge
- An editable slide show using Canva
- 45 printable Healthy Eating Cards (also available digitally in Google Slides)
- An 8-page student packet (available as an editable & printable PDF and interactive digital packet in Google Slides)
- Opportunities for movement
- 6 Extension Activities to enrich student learning
What Are Healthy Foods focuses on National Health Education Standards 1 and 2. It is a great set up for any planning and goal-setting project.
